Good housekeeping circa 1950

Hey everyone,

My grandmother recently sent me an article she found in her local paper. For reference purposes, it’s by Mélissa Viau and was printed in “Le Quotiden” on January 13th, 2007. I spent some time searching for a link to this article, but it would appear that even the almighty internet has not yet gotten a taste of it. I found some information about the source of the information herein, though, and was horrified to discover much of it is straight from the era’s school curriculum. The article is in French (my grandmother lives in Quebec) but is well worth spending the time to type out and translate for you. It should be noted that my grandmother sent me this article out of disgust at it’s contents, not nostalgia about the ‘good old days’. Continue reading “Good housekeeping circa 1950″

Webtools

Hey everyone,

Now that I’m happy with the website, I’ve been mulling over the sorts of things I’d like to add to it. I’ve got a forum, photo gallery, wiki and this blog… But what now? I came to the conclusion that some tools might be interesting. I used to have an annuity calculator which I’d made in Excel that was pretty popular. I also made a grade calculator in Excel which I use to track my courses; that program is very well liked. So, maybe I can make them in PHP? Or at least make some generic ones which folks can download for their own interests.

That’s my next goal.

Version 6.0

Tag: Site DevelopmentNicholas Guindon @ 19:32

Hey everyone,

I’m tearing through versions like nobody’s business these days. Version 5.0 was such a significant overhaul from Version 4.4 that it opened the door to all sorts of efficiency increases, which I suspect culminated in today’s Version 6.0. Honestly, it can’t really get much shorter – the index is a mere 26 lines of code, down from the roughly 600 of Version 4.4!

I’m quite happy with the code right now, it’s capable of doing pretty much everything I want from it (which, admittedly, is not much) with the absolute minimum of lost time. My next task, which I’ll probably undertake tomorrow, is the improval of the banner image. I’d like the banner to be 960px wide instead of 640px; 640px is for antiques.

[EDIT] The image quality and size have both been increased. Version 6.1!

PSA

Hey everyone,

This is a little different from what I’ve posted in the past: I have two Public Service Announcements to make.

  • To those people who seem to think they’re the only ones who speak French: You’re not. The funny thing about a bilingual country is that there are these strange people who speak two languages.
  • To those people who stand in the middle of the high traffic Vari Hall / Ross / Central Square connection area and chat with their friends: Don’t. Continue reading “PSA”

Version 5.3

Tag: Site DevelopmentNicholas Guindon @ 19:23

Hey everyone,

I was expecting it to take longer to design, but Version 5.3 is now live, noticeably featuring a shiny new visual theme. Versions 5.0 – 5.2 were mostly mechanic upgrades building up to this one. There are still a few things I’d like to do with this theme:

  • Improve the visual quality of the text on the title banner / navigation. It’s a little grainy, which I hate.
  • Once the quality of the image is improved, I want to increase the size of the image from 640px to 960px (wide).
  • Limit the width of the text to the width of the navigation banner.

As for longer term goals, I’m still working on a French translation method. The mechanics introduced in Version 5 will allow for a very simple way for the user to view the site in English or French, but the various programs (Wiki, Blog, Gallery, Forum) are trickier. Some are dirt simple to patch (Forum), others I’m still looking into. I don’t want a half assed French translation, but I don’t have the programming know-how to make one myself…
