Major site update

Tag: Site DevelopmentNicholas Guindon @ 10:02

Hey everyone,

Welcome to version 7.0 of the site. There were some hiccups with the implementation of this design, including the short lived fear that I’d erased all my old blog posts (I tried to import the wrong backup file), but nothing too significant.

My original plan had been to shrink the old nav bar to something less massive, but then I realized that the home page didn’t actually serve any purpose. Now I have a new theme that I got off the WordPress site, although I made several changes. There’s some stuff left to do, but the hard work is over.

[EDIT] The theme is called “Dark City 1.0″. Things I ended up changing:

  • The left and right columns were duplicates of each other. I deleted everything in the right column except for “Meta” and added “Pages”.
  • Added an “Edit” link to everywhere it would be in default WordPress theme. Having to go through the Site Admin every time I wanted to edit a post was tedious.
  • Changed the highly compressed low quality banner image with a nebula image (more my style and higher image quality).
  • Darkened the bright red stripe considerably.

Aquarium Update

Tag: GeneralNicholas Guindon @ 17:30

Hey everyone,

Ok, so now I’ve had the Aquarium for almost a week and my original 4 fish are all still alive! Furthermore the water quality tests all show that the water is in good condition, although I’d like the pH to be a little lower. It has dropped from the 7.8 – 8.0 it was hovering around on the 15th to 7.4 – 7.6 now. I got a “pH proper” water conditioner which should drop the pH and hold it at 7.0 given time. The Nitrate, Nitrite and Ammonia levels are all registering as “minimum”, which is another good sign. The lack of direct sunlight is great for the tank, there’s no visible algae and the water is crystal clear. Finally, I got 4 more Neon Tetras to bring the total school size to 7 (plus 1 Blind Cave Tetra).

In other Aquarium news, I have already given up on naming the fish. Names were amusing when there was a group of 3 which matched well with the “Three Musketeers”, but a school of 7 cannot be given neat names nor any valuable unifying theme. Naming fish is a moot point anyways, since they don’t respond and I can’t differentiate between them. Blindy might retain the name “Homer”, we’ll see.

I’m still working on getting a decent picture.

[EDIT] As of September 30th they are all still alive and kicking. The second water change went off without a hitch, which makes my aquarium officially no longer “new” (for the first 2 weeks double biosupport is added). Water quality is good, pH is still high but decreasing steadily.

Aquarium

Tag: GeneralNicholas Guindon @ 18:01

Hey everyone,

I was thinking about ways to liven up my room a bit, and figured an aquarium might be nice. I asked Charlie and he thought it was a fantastic idea. Since I’ve never had an aquarium I asked my parents about it, and my mom said if I tried it and didn’t like it, we’d move it out and she’d take over. So we went out and got a 10 gallon tank (recommended for beginners and, due to their popularity, relatively inexpensive) starter kit. Then I got 3 Neon Tetras and 1 Blind Cave Tetra. I had done some research and Tetras are mostly good beginner fish; Neon Tetras in particular being popular, hardy and pretty. The Blind Cave Tetra isn’t very pretty and was more of an impulse purchase because it was so active. Continue reading “Aquarium”

Fall 2007

Tag: UniversityNicholas Guindon @ 14:14

Hey everyone,

So the Fall 2007 semester has begun, and I never even made an entry about how my social science course was. I’m a failure at blogging, which doesn’t prevent me from sleeping at night since the term “blog” grates my nerves anyways. Despite this I feel slightly negligent, so I’ll talk about sosc1000 and my four new Fall courses. Continue reading “Fall 2007″

Site update in the near future

Tag: Site DevelopmentNicholas Guindon @ 11:09

Hey everyone,

I just updated the site for the Fall 2007 semester, which began September 5. There’s a few things missing that will be filled in ASAP. I’m also planning to give the site a serious overhaul from the current Version 6.4 to (drum roll) 7.0! It’s not actually all that impressive, since it’s an aesthetic update rather than a code one. Despite the prettiness of the galaxy navigation image, I’m tired of how huge it is.

So, expect an update either this weekend or next weekend, depending on how much time it takes me to polish off the assigned readings. Of course, I said I’d update the blog with a description of Social Science and never did that, so… I guess the update is also dependent on overcoming my laziness.
